Dr. Chaujun Lee passed away peacefully at 9AM 4/19/2011. His family would like to thank everyone for their support. The funeral ceremony is set to this Sunday 4/24. More detailed information will be posted later. Please continue to support his family.
All medical bills have been covered by the insurance company.

Per Dr. Chaujun Lee's family request, the charity group of Evergreen Senior care is posting his story on the website. The full story provided by his friend Mr. Joe Wang.

~~~~~~~~~
Our friend Dr. Chaujun Lee has had nasopharyngeal carcinoma (cancer) for about 4 years. He went through many difficult procedures and treatments, but is no longer receiving any. Now, the doctor is just doing his best to try to minimize the pain. Dr. Lee is in Manor Care Nursing Home right now. Due to the expensive medical care and large amount of paperwork, they are in need of others' support.
One critical lesson his family would like to share with those of Chinese heritage in America is that American doctors seldom deal with cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The symptoms of NPC are very similar to allergies or sinus infection. Despite the fact that he was examined by 3 experienced doctors, the final diagnose came too late. Even blood test might not identify this disease. Checking with an experienced Chinese specialist is highly recommended. (information about NPC can be found as a post script.)
The family would like to emphasize the importance of early detection of NPC (especially for those of Asian heritage). In its early stages, nasopharyngeal carcinoma may not cause any symptoms. Possible noticeable symptoms of nasopharyngeal carcinoma include:
  1. swollen glands or lumps on the side of the neck, even without other symptoms or sicknessess
  2. potting of blood in mucus from nose or mouth
  3. ringing noises, hard of hearing, or pain in the ears
  4. constant nasal congestion
  5. headaches on only one side of the head for no apparent reason
  6. unexplainable loss of pupil control - crosseyes, double vision, numbness in the face
Of course not everyone will experience all of these symptoms, but it is best to err on the side of caution and take preventative action. We would wish this sickness could be detected as early as possible.
It's a daunting task to take care of Dr. Lee in the nursing home. Joe and friends are working on a Google Calendar to share the time among close friends. You would only have to have a Google Email account. Once you have an account and can share the effort, Mrs. Lee will provide you with Permission to “Make changes to event”. Then you could help as a coordinator to arrange the caretaking/visiting time among friends.
One tough question is how to handle the enormous medical expense that is not covered by insurance. A few friends started to look into the issue, but we are still trying to figure this out. If you have any suggestions, please email to Mr. Joe Wang at "joewang_va@yahoo.com" .
Donations can be sent to:
13107 Farmsted Court, Herndon, VA 20171.
Please make checks payable to "Mrs. Chinman Lee"
A few suggestions for friends to visit Dr. Lee in Manor Care Nursing Home :
  1. Please come in small group 1~3 people. This is a request from the Nursing Home.
  2. If you are sick or not sure, please wait after you are fully recovered.
  3. Wash your hand before taking care of Dr. Lee.
  4. Sing in, sign out and write a few messages.
  5. A few visitors’ notices are posted above the bed. Please read it.
我們的朋友李朝正博士得了鼻咽癌,他和癌症搏鬪了四年,經歷許多痛苦的療程,身體越來越弱,如今在癌細胞的強勢侵襲下,醫生只能開止痛藥減輕他的痛,並安排他住進了Manor Care Nursing Home.
李博士生病在家期間,沒有收入,他的太太菁滿女士在小學當特教助理,薪資不多,他的家庭長期以來飽受精神及經濟壓力, 此時此刻急需要善心人士的幫忙.
經過這麼多磨難, 李家希望把他們不幸的教訓告知在美的華人,事實是美國醫生很少處理鼻咽癌的例子。大多數鼻咽癌的病徵, 和鼻子過敏或鼻竇感染非常相似。那就是為什麼李朝正博士找了3 位經驗豐富的醫生, 最後確定是癌症時, 已經錯過了早期治療的好時機。血液測試可能無法識別這種疾病。強烈建議請經驗豐富的華人專家檢查.
李家強調鼻咽癌早期發現的重要性(尤其是那些亞裔。在其早期階段,鼻咽癌可能不會引起任何症狀。明顯的症狀可能包括:
  • 在你的頸部出現腫塊引起的淋巴結腫大
  • 血液在你的唾液,鼻子血液分泌物
  • 耳鳴,重聽或耳痛
  • 常鼻塞
  • 沒有明顯的原因頭痛
  • 無法解釋的損失瞳孔控制-斜視眼,复視,面部麻木
現在, 李朝正博士正在療養院, 病人照料是一項艱鉅的任務。他的一些好朋友利用 Google Calendar 正在安排人力支援, 希望減輕李太太--菁滿的負擔.在這關鍵的時刻, 李家還面臨的另一個棘手問題,就是如何挑起保險公司不給付的龐大醫療費用。我們懇請, 如果您有任何醫療保險的寶貴建議可供參考,請直接連絡 Mr. Joe Wang
同時,善心捐款可以直接寄到:
13107 Farmsted Court, Herndon, VA 20171.
Please make checks payable to "Mrs. Chinman Lee"
如果您去Manor Care Nursing Home探望朝正, 在此有一點小小的建議:
  1. 該療養院要求每回訪客人數以1-3 人為限
  2. 病人抵抗力弱, 如果訪客本人生病, 請等到完全康復後再去
  3. 照顧李博士之前,請洗手
  4. 簽名並寫幾句照顧紀錄
  5. 請閱讀床頭牆上的”訪客需知”
李家和我們這些朋友深深感謝您對李家的關懷和溫馨的支持, 祝福大家!
Randy Liang Tragedy
What Local Community did for Randy Liang's family and here is what has been accomplished:
5/1:
Ms. Vera Zhao has recently found a stable job and is doing very well getting back on her feet after Randy Liang’s tragic accident. After Vera was notified of her job hiring, she immediately contacted us and thanked us and all of those who offered her a hand when she was in need.
Not only did she thank Evergreen Senior Care, Inc. and local community for all that all volunteers had done for her, but she also asked to join the charity and is kindly wanting to help those in need around her community as well as lending a helping head to the less fortunate. Because of the amount of compassion and consideration of the volunteers and friends around her, she was moved to return the aid to others who could use her help as well.
As for Randy, he is back in school and living his normal daily routines. The students at Langley High School were very welcoming in his return and assured him that everyone was supporting him in every way and that they were willing to lend a helping hand if he needed it. All in all, one lesson is to be learned from this incident—you cannot do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late.
  • Ms. Vera Zhao (Randy's mother) got a full-time job. Liang family pass $300 grocery gift card of May to Dr. Chaujun Lee's family.
  • Message from Beth Stvan: We are thrilled to report that the Liang family returned to their home yesterday! It was a long, exhausting and stressful journey from the New Jersey hospital trauma unit as Randy’s condition is still “fragile” but fortunately all the connections went smoothly. Despite a bad headache, fever and stomach pains, Randy’s trip home went as planned. A HUGE thanks goes out to the Great Falls Fire Station for providing an ambulance and two medics who volunteered their time to transport the family to their home. Randy' s road to recovery will be closely monitored by his doctors and involve six weeks of bed rest, no stairs and limited movement but he is grateful to be home finally. We know that so many people are eager to help out with Randy's recovery and we'll be sure to reach out with an update as we become aware of their needs. The outreach and support from the community over the last few days has been amazing and efforts continue to help this family in their time of need.
Full Story in English:
Randy Liang, 14 year old Freshman and member of the Langley High School band, was attending an out of state school band function the weekend of March 12th. He became ill Saturday and went back to his hotel room where he passed out during the night from pain and was rushed to the emergency room in the morning with a ruptured spleen.
Vera Zhao, mother, is in New Jersey, staying 24/7 in the hospital at her son's bedside where he remains in the trauma unit. The future is difficult for doctors to predict right now as his condition is very serious; however, they are optimistic that he will eventually return back to his home in Virginia.
Unfortunately, this is a family that has come upon some very difficult times in the past year. Vera's husband died this past summer after an 8 year battle with cancer. Due to his condition, they were unable to obtain life insurance. Vera did return to work as an Oracle database administrator; however, in February 2011, her consulting contract with the government was not renewed and she has been out of work, without benefits, since February 28th. At that time, she was given the option to sign up for COBRA insurance but struggled with being able to afford the monthly fees of $1,200. Today(3/18), she has decided to fill out the COBRA paperwork as she is still within the 45 day window to register; however, making ends meet will now be challenging since she is unable to seek employment as she needs to be with her ill son.
Derrick, (Forestville 3rd grader/LeLoup), is residing with relatives in New Jersey, an hour from the hospital.As always, our community does a wonderful job of assisting those in their time of need and this truly is a family in need of help.
Vera was incredibly calm and upbeat on the phone yet broke down in tears when the offer was extended to “rally the troops” to collect money to assist her and her family.
For the short term, the immediate need is financial assistance.
  • Cash donations to cover expenses
  • Pro-bono financial advisor to review their expenses and develop a plan for the near future to cover costs
  • Pro-bono financial advisor abreast of current laws and regulations regarding setting up trusts for charitable contributions
  • Assistance completing COBRA paperwork and any other school paperwork (insurance related)
Long term needs:
  • Potentially, hotel rooms or a home rental for up to six months in the New Jersey area if the diagnosis is that the child cannot be transported back to VA
  • Medical transportation back to VA for Randy (this will be complicated as his system is extremely fragile)
  • Meals when back in VA
  • Assistance with 504 Plan and tutoring for Randy If you are able to "pay it forward", Donations can be sent to: Wachovia, 750 Walker Rd., Great Falls, VA 22055, payable to " Liang Family" account 8857 (this is a non-tax deductions)
華生出意外 社區發起互助網記者許惠敏維州報導 (世界新聞網-北美華文新聞 ) 費郡蘭格利高中(Langley H.S.)高一學生梁詣深(Randy Liang) 上周六與學校樂隊赴紐約演出,不慎在旅館內發生意外,造成第四級脾臟破裂,由於梁家男主人八個月前才因腸癌過世,支撐家計的女主人趙銳又不巧在上個月失業,包括梁詣深就讀學校、華人社區已發起互助網,希望能助梁詣深一家度過又一難關。
趙銳指出,梁詣深是在旅館上樓時走急了自己撞了牆,一開始只覺腹痛,第二天上午送醫後,才確診出是脾臟破裂。
新澤西州聖約瑟夫醫院院方對梁詣深給予止痛劑,減緩痛楚,醫生觀察後認為脾臟出血應已控制,器官並可自行復原,並未開刀或進行治療。
趙銳說,丈夫抗癌八年,已積欠一筆可觀醫藥費,今年2月又丟了工作,正愁著房子貸款繳不出來,也沒來得及申請COBRA空窗期醫療保險就碰到這意外,真的是雪上加霜!
趙銳說,過去這幾天,來自社區的關心與協助,讓她在人生低谷中看到希望,蘭格利高中校長Matt Ragone領隊利用學校官網發起關懷網,幾天內即有家長、教職員出面,有的代表梁家和醫院交涉、為趙銳申請COBRA入保,還有家長志願擔起每個月1200的保費,她說,關懷源源湧至,讓她感動之餘,也惶恐不知如何回報。社區慈善機構、公益組織,希望在梁詣深轉回費郡醫院後及未來長程的休養過程中,號召華人社區出錢出力,幫助這家人度過難關。
有心協助梁家的華人,可以在下周一(3/21)起響應蘭格利高中樂隊所設立的Team RandyT恤義賣活動或捐款,網站是:http://www.fcps.edu/LangleyHS/,華人社區有心協助者,Please contact Evergreen Senior Care
宜蘭縣私立神愛兒童之家
Updated on 12/31/2011
由於我們一直再找一個緣份,可以有機會回饋給社會,幫助一些一出生就處於弱勢的小孩。以往,我們就亳無目標地,匯款給幾個孤兒院,盡點心意。在 2007年,由於某位朋友在歷經長達五年的折磨,終於成功地從台灣領養一位男嬰,在過程中,雖有很多不盡人意的事,但他們終究是完成了為人父母的夢想。在歡迎新成員的 party下,不知羨剎多少人。當然,讓我這位在半路中,才義務充當中文翻譯的中間人感動的,還是莫過於我朋友臉上充滿母愛的喜悅與孩子幸福的笑容。
被這份感動衝昏了頭,我居然想當起幫父母找孩子,及幫孤兒找好父母的媒婆。當然,事情比我想像地複雜許多....,原來它是個行業,是個可以讓好幾個家人被養家糊口的行業,我這個義工是在打亂市場行情,政府單位的冷莫及孤兒院的不友善態度,讓我幾近放棄,也對一直以為單純的領養關係有重新的認識。
在2008年,在一個很偶然的機會,有一位台灣的社工介紹了宜蘭神愛兒童之家給我,希望我能在台灣之行時,抽空探訪一下,這個在台灣已經有卅八年歷史且由一對外國夫婦成立的孤兒院....
初始探訪"神愛兒童之家",它的地址真是很不好找,我們的計程車到了冬山鄉得安村大埤二路,卻始終找不著189巷...., 很遠就可看到十字架,但卻始終不得其門而入,原來它被許多很有特色的民宿給藏了起來了。它確實誠如社工告訴我的,樸實乾淨,沒有現代化的累贅,卅幾年來,它惟一不變的就是主體建築。我們的造訪是北台灣的初夏季節,而我的先生及表弟已經是熱得像哈巴狗,在外面的大樹下納涼了。他們沒有冷氣,因為不環保且浪費,雖然有一屋子的才剛蒞臨的初生嬰兒,但牧師娘以不是很標準的中文告訴我一個相當長的道理,但簡而言之,就是心靜自然涼。 :P
在我們表明來打聽領養小孩且不是基督徒的來意後,牧師依舊很熱心地服務我們,牧師娘的快人快語雖是考驗我的修養,但細聽卻發現句句真實,由於心靜自然涼,也就沒有任何"氣"。反倒是,在與他們的短暫相處後,重新認識基督徒,他們夫妻真心的付出,經年累積出來的智慧與行事方法,卻讓我當下決定要想辦法贊助他們的大德。由於在台灣的現金捐款,在美國是無法抵稅,由於受限於此,所有的募款必需在台灣區內產生,也請捐助者,自行劃撥至該院。
該孤兒院在當地盡力收養由警察局或社會局轉介來的棄嬰及被虐童,在教會的監督下,他們是希望由具備教徒資格者,來該處領養小孩,當領養案件成功,他們不收取任何費用,只要求養父母要每週固定帶小孩到當地推薦他們前來領養的教會報到,拜見牧師,再由當地牧師夫婦來監督養父母是否適合與小孩成為永久的一家人。過去卅幾年來,凡是由該處被領養的孩子,大部份都有好的歸宿,那些遺珠之憾的案件,將成為他們永久的教訓。這樣對孩童不棄不離的態度,實在令人動容及佩服的五體投地。
在心中雖有點遺憾自己不是基督徒,但崇尚宗教自由的我,還是用自己的方法來贊助他們的義舉!
我和台灣義工鄭佩玲小姐商量後,當年我們就聯手賣起 coach包包,將所有的營餘,分亳不取地,分一半給該孤兒院,另一半給就近的岳明國小營養午餐費;也因此因緣,讓我們倆個再度瞭解,原來我們也不適合做零售業。 :( 但,我們還是會繼續我們對上帝的承諾,雖然在他們的奉獻徵信上,每個月會出現不同的捐款者姓名, 但每個月五千元的補助金額,是永不熄燈。 :)
如果您想更進一步瞭解神愛兒童之家,請參觀他們的 web page http://enneagram.myweb.hinet.net/introduction.htm
Volunteer English Teaching in TAIWAN - 台灣宜蘭岳明國小
In the good cause of traction, the volunteer Ada T. and Mrs. Kris Kang, the principal's wife of The Yueming Elementary School, met by chance in the orphanage - The Home of God's Love.
After a long talk, the Evergreen Senior Care charity group agrees to team with the Yueming Elementary School, to help those most in need and also make this world to be a better place together.
The Yueming Elementary School is located in the countryside of Taiwan, and about 53% of kids in the school require help. This school is built to attain the "recycling resources" goal, which comprises policies such as "saving energy and reducing carbon dioxide", and "establishing environmental education"; they are to realize energy-saving and carbon dioxide reduction by recycling and reusing resources. Not only as education in school, saving energy and reducing carbon dioxide is also what students can use to exercise in their daily life. Yueming(岳明) Elementary School, in rural Yilan, is a model for water conservation, thanking largely to the ecological pool on campus. (reference http://english.moe.gov.tw/ct.asp?xItem=10119&ctNode=502&mp=11)
Due to many natural disasters that have happened in Taiwan, the catastrophes damaged the school library which it took several years to build. As requested from PTA volunteer of the Yueming Elementary School, charity group of the Evergreen senior care adopted this poor elementary school library, and this library is also the only library of this poverty-filled town. Through the kindness of local volunteers, the school library has been re-opened. Now it is available throughout the day and also provides meals to children studying here. If live in the USA and also would like to make book donations, please contact us at EvergreenSeniorCare@gmail.com".
If you live in the Taiwan area, please mail your donations to the school directly.
The Evergreen Senior Care presently works with public schools in Taiwan; all schools that need help are located in the rural and poor area and serve the needy kids. Non-native English speakers can also join this project
  • Certificate of Appreciation/Completion: The Yueming Elementary School and the Evergreen Senior Care will issue you a certification of appreciation, an accomplished and important addition for your professional resume once you complete the volunteer project
  • Safe Volunteer Placement: We will strive to place you in a safe humanitarian volunteer work placement. You will be able to do good deed for those most in need; thus, you will make this world a better place.
Skills/Qualifications
Volunteers should be high-school students or older and the overall grade should be no lower than a "B". However, volunteers should have enough knowledge of English to effectively teach the basics to students. Non-native speakers can join this project if they speak, read, and write in English. No salary or benefits will be offered in this project.
Volunteer's Responsibilities
In Taiwan, there is a growing demand for an English education. With the economic growth, learning English become a necessary tool for the needy in order to get out of the poverty they are currently in. Education is the most important resource that kids can help them to create a brighter future. Many of the schools in Taiwan are very eager to get native English teachers for teaching English. Unfortunately, only the private and high-tuition schools in the metropolitan areas are able to attract them. Therefore, as a volunteer English teacher, you will teach English at these poor and rural schools. It would be possible to arrange for free rooms, but these schools do not offer extra salaries/benefits like private schools will do.
Room/food/supervision
The Yueming Elementary school will arrange a private room and provides two meals a day for each volunteer. The Head Master of your placement school will be your main contact.
Personal Finances
Participants are responsible for paying a round trip air travel to and from Taiwan, train tickets, accidental insurance and health insurance throughout the program, and any vaccinations they choose.
Waiver of Liability
Upon selection, all participants will be asked to submit a signed Waiver of Liability argeement with Evergreen Senior Care and The Yueming Elementary School, Yilan, Taiwan. Participants who do not submit a Waiver of Liability agreement by the June 1 dealline will be considered not qualified to participate in the 2010 summer service learning program.
在一個很好的因緣的牽引下,義工 Ada T. 與校長夫人康貴菊女士在宜蘭縣私立神愛兒童之家見了第一次的面之後,就埋下了未來合作的緣份。
岳明國小地處偏鄉,位於宜蘭縣蘇澳鎮鎮港邊里嶺腳路140號,全校有1.6公頃,學生弱勢家庭比例偏高(全校學生總數74人,弱勢家庭學生占全校學生數的53%。)。目前社區有兩、三百戶,當年居民曾為保護鄉土,反對火力發電的興建,之後成立了無尾港水鳥保護區。黃校長並與當地居民緊密互動,結合社區居民與岳明國小師生共同合作,想要將學校經營成一個永續循環型社會新基地,將社區環境結合成為一個極賦人文素養的社區,期待未來的生活方式是能與大自然維繫,並能從動手實做,盡可能食用當地食物,來活絡在地經濟,以達到慢食樂活的境地,在精神上追求身心靈的平衡,成為一個無條件的愛與關懷的人文環境,而非物質上充裕與成功的生活方式。黃校長的用心,令大家非常感佩。 (source: http://uniedutw.blogspot.com/2008/10/blog-post_26.html)
由於去年台灣天災太多,該小學花好幾年打造出來的小型圖書館的圖書全部泡了水...也因此,我們認養了這個物資貧乏的小學的圖書館,這個圖書館是該社區唯一一個可以讓小孩脫貧的地方,透過在地善心人士的幫忙,該小學圖書館是全天開放並提供餐點給前來唸書的孩子。
如果你居住在美國,家有好的英文書打算要捐出來,請通知我們 at "EvergreenSeniorCare@gmail.com"。
若有中文圖書要捐,請從台灣逕洽該校。(請見左邊該校小朋友在接到第一批由台灣當地的義工所捐的中文圖書後,寫的圖文並茂的感謝函,實在很可愛。 )
我們在美國區的運作如下:由 Evergreen home care 名義收集大家捐來好的英文兒童讀物及有教育性的玩具。
然後,如果有義工回台灣洽公或旅遊時,在義工發揮大愛的意願下,免費幫該校將書載回台灣濟貧 (有心的義工都會事先告訴我他們何時會回台灣,讓我有機會準備書籍給他們,去年,我們花了十人次的行李,才把書運完)
在台灣台北或宜蘭地區,校長太太會親臨您家領取;若於其它台灣地區,我們鼓勵郵寄到學校,郵費部份,您可以選擇拿 evergreen home care 的捐贈收據在美抵稅,或將郵費收據給我,我會付您台幣現金。
Year 2009, 我們手上全有的英文書已經透過所有義工的善心,已全部捐達該校的圖書館 。(請見隨文附上的校長謝函。)
在 2010 年, 該校的學童英語學習動機與成就普遍不足,我們與學校正在計劃進行第一梯的英語夏令營。計劃由美國大學及高中生成立的義工團,今年七月將初聲試啼以自助的方式與該校一起來進行一個不可能的任務--一個文武兼備的英語夏令營,該校校長期讓孩子必須使用英語來參與各項活動(生態 帆船 烹飪 生活 遊戲等) ,我們很期待第一次的成果,未來將陸續分享給您。
(按一下上圖,您可以看到更多孩子的謝卡感謝來自台灣台北的義工陳伯蒼先生捐贈的第一批數萬元的中文圖書對他們的影響與喜悅。)
宜蘭縣蘇澳鎮岳明國小介紹 [聯合報╱記者王燕華╱宜蘭報導】
宜蘭縣蘇澳鎮岳明國小3年來推動節能減碳,從節水、省電到設置太陽能燈及熱水器,一年可以省下近6萬元的水電費,換算下來一年可減排1萬7661公斤的碳排放量,成果很不錯,也讓岳明國小獲教育部選為節能減碳的示範學校。
校長黃建榮說,教育部在全國選出3間學校為示範學校,其中國小僅有1所,當時共有50多所學校報名,最後由岳明國小獲選。
岳明國小落實節能減碳措施,知名的電視頻道Discovery日後就到岳明國小拍攝台灣綠生活主題的節目,另外包括大愛電視、公共電視也到岳明國小取景,拍攝校園內的生態池、雨水回收設施、有機農園等。
為了節能減碳,岳明國小設置學校能資源使用監控系統,選擇4間不同的教室進行溫度、濕度環境監測,對於用電量、用水量都設置監測表,不但達到節能效果,也是很好的教材。
黃建榮說,學校推行節能省碳3年來,每月平均可省下1千元水費、3800元電費,以及2.5桶的20公斤桶裝瓦斯,每月累積省下5萬9225元的水電和瓦斯費。 如果換算成排碳量,省下來的水約等於211公斤的二氧化碳,省下來的電共高達1萬7千多公斤的二氧化碳;使用太陽能熱水器取代瓦斯熱水器後,則相當於節省了160公斤的二氧化碳。
岳明國小獲選為教育部的示範學校,黃建榮說更重要的是讓學生也能學習到節能減碳的重要,學校已規劃相關課程,將節能減碳融入課程中。 【2009/12/15 聯合報】
大愛新聞DaAiTV-專題報導-拯救地球-台灣溼地篇(四) -宜蘭岳明國小
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ti3RJTbURk
全球暖化帶來的氣候異常變化,讓人們重新省思人與環境的關係,宜蘭縣蘇澳鎮的岳明國小,這是一所迷你國小,每年級的學生大約只有十個人,卻因為實施節能減碳及推廣永續循環教育。該校有一座名為『時空部落』的秘密基地,基地的建材是用工廠的廢木材建造的,學生們在手工打造的土窯裡烤披薩,在小農菜園學習有機無毒的耕種方式, 同學們不但用牛糞做肥料、以回收雨水澆灌菜苗,用不傷害環境的方式讓資源循環再利用。 學校利用屋頂將生活中最重要的吃、喝、拉、撒設計成一個循環系統,既能因應生活需求,又不造成環境負擔,是聯合國教科文組織推薦的「培育永續發展教育師資示範案例」。關心環境關心地球的你,千萬不可錯過喔!
Haiti relief donations now tax-deductible for 2009
http://www.csmonitor.com/Money/new-economy/2010/0126/Haiti-earthquake-disaster-relief-IRS-makes-donations-tax-deductible-for-2009
If you've made a donation to Haiti relief, the IRS will let you claim a deduction on your 2009 tax bill.
"Americans have opened their hearts to help those affected by the Haiti earthquake," says IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman in a news release." This new law provides an immediate tax benefit for the many taxpayers who have made generous donations."
Only cash contributions made between Jan. 12, 2010, and March 1, 2010, to organizations involved in earthquake relief in Haiti are eligible. Taxpayers can see whether an organization qualifies to receive charitable donations through this IRS site, although not all groups are listed on the site, according to the release.
Text-messaging donations can be validated by providing a telephone bill that shows the name of the organization and the date of the donation. The IRS has taken similar action during at least one other natural disaster, allowing those who donated to help victims of the 2005 Indian Ocean tsunami to count their contributions against their 2004 taxes.
已故老師捐款助學 泰武鄉99名學童受惠
文/李孟霖
日前癌症病逝的清華大學藝術中心講師洪麗珠,因學術行動研究而與泰武鄉結緣,有感於原鄉孩子常在家中經濟困頓下,喪失了學習的機會,於是許下幫助部落孩子的心願,期盼培育出研究人才,返鄉投入部落研究,延續、承接著他生前熱愛的部落藝術文化的研究。在屏東家扶中心的牽線下,洪麗珠老師慈善基金共捐贈出13萬6仟元的獎助學金,共計有99名泰武鄉學童受惠。
「貧窮不能打敗你的求學鬥志」,洪老師生前常以此來鼓勵原鄉部落的孩子,今日於泰武國中舉辦捐贈儀式,由洪老師的夫婿刑泰剛先生代表病逝的老師出席,受贈的99位學童也將親手製作感謝卡回饋給已故的洪麗珠老師。泰武國中的林姓學生寫道:「謝謝妳(指洪麗珠老師)這份來自不一樣世界的關心與愛,讓我一樣感受到人的溫暖,我自許將來也有能力能夠像妳一樣,去幫助需要幫助的人,因為施比受更有福、更快樂...。」
洪老師生前的好友邱霄鳳(泰武鄉族語老師)分享,洪老師一路以獎助學金求學,到被癌症病魔附身,是個愛生命、學習、原住民族群的人,只祈求上帝教導她數算生命中的美好,讓她用生命的餘力來完成原住民族的研究,期待透過文化的傳承、被看見,讓原住民族人能夠更愛自己的文化與上天賦予的天籟才能來代表洪麗珠老師及其夫婿刑泰剛先生勉勵在座的99位泰武鄉學童。
頒獎典禮的尾聲,由邱霄鳳老師帶領著與會的來賓,一起象徵性的將汽球愛心,一起種在花盆裡,象徵著大家帶著與洪麗珠老師一樣,有著對弱勢家庭學童關愛的精神,一起把愛找回家,把愛種在學童的心中,再把愛傳播到社會各個角落,讓這個社會充滿愛的氛圍,讓愛這個善的種子不斷在社會中循環與發芽,場面溫馨與感人。
屏東家扶中心表示,洪麗珠老師本為家扶長期認養人,在病逝後,仍願為偏鄉貧困兒童付出的情懷,相當感動。尤以八八風災過後,泰武村民必須遷村至永久屋,對部落居民的生活環境與經濟維持產生巨大的衝擊,家扶中心辦理受災地區學校認養方案,協助並陪伴受災的居民,透過向社會勸募,提升學童身心發展,並透過社會企業辦理,協助受災地區災民學習第二專長。
屏東家扶扶幼主委邱吉興/陳淑蘭分區主委/許月圓副主委夫人及傅敏峯主任、邱霄鳳老師等與會來賓,一起將病逝的洪麗珠老師的愛心種在花盆,象徵在今天99位獲得獎助學金的學童的心中種下希望,未來可以一起將愛傳播出去,永留人間(屏東家扶中心 提供)
讓我與您分享我們在台灣的義工是如何運用您的捐款來協助這些因八八水災而變成失親兒的故事..
八八水災發生的第一時間,身在美東的我們只能隔著電視關心災情,但在不同時空的同一時間,Peggy Chen 的同學 Miss. X 已駕著她四輪傳動的車子,前進災區。
Miss. X是十年前 921地震的受災戶,她深知災民的痛及需求,立即放下手邊的工作,前進災區回饋當初陌生人給她的援助及溫暖。當她從六龜育幼院回來後,在前往阿里山災區前,分享了災區現狀給我們的義工 Peggy Chen,而後,才會有我們發起募款及後來的這些關懷失親兒的個案。
由於大家的慈悲心,雖然大家已先前捐錢給慈濟協助救災了,但大家還是傾囊相助地,讓我們在短短的一星期內,很快就累積了台幣15萬的捐款,衷心感謝。
當我們隨著Miss. X 的救災腳步後,我們發現台灣處處是溫情。當義工 Vivian Wu 接觸廠商們表明購物意願之際,廠商立即全都變成了慷慨的捐贈者,也因為如此事件不斷地發生,造成我們的台幣15萬一直留在手上。
後來,由於 Miss X 的掏心建議,我們已從對八八水災災民的救急金,轉變成因八八水災而變成失親兒的孤兒們的長期照顧。希望我們的即時相助,這些已站在懸崖邊的孩子們可以再度看到人生的亮光。
在過去一個月,為了找尋這些失親兒,我幾近每天與義工 Peggy 在國際電話線上,由於我們人全在美東,在台灣的Peggy 有三個小小孩在身邊,這種環境因素實在困著了我們的救災,就在此時,上天聽到了我們的心聲,瓊瓶師姐即時貢獻了她的哥哥李居士,Angela Huang 貢獻了黃伯母,林妙玲貢獻了她所有在高雄的親人幫我們協尋及照顧八八水災的失親兒。我們依舊在尋找住在嘉義的朋友,可以做我們的義工來幫助這些失親兒
我們承諾孩子們,只要他們願意站起來,我們就願意協助他們找到屬於自己的光。
目前在 Exxon Mobil Corporation 工作的 Mr. Timmy Yee,已經透過公司的 charity matching program 正式加入我們,一起來協助失親兒走出失親陰霾,及勇敢自信地面對未來。如果您有興趣加入我們一起來兌現這個承諾, 請寄 email 到 EvergreenSeniorCare@gmail.com
Case 3 ~5: 那瑪夏鄉,原稱三民鄉,位於台灣南部,高雄縣東北方之山嶽地帶。該鄉地處玉山山脈之上,地勢高聳崎嶇,該鄉為高雄縣三個原住民鄉鎮之一,鄉內居民以台灣原住民族布農族為主,鄒族及排灣族次之。
在2009年的八八水災中,那瑪夏受到慘重災情。南沙魯村(原民族村)慘遭土石流吞沒,民族國小全毀。位於瑪雅村的民權國小也被土石掩埋,民生國小也全毀或半毀,而三民國中也幾乎成廢墟。
這次我們關懷的對象為那瑪夏鄉民族國小的謝xx,劉xx和李xx等三位小朋友。由於88風災摧毀校園,目前民族國小全校寄讀於高雄縣旗山國小(地址:高雄縣旗山鎮華中街44號)。
謝xx小弟弟只有五歲,在這次災變前,剛好被70歲的阿嬤謝喜妹帶到屏東縣看醫生,祖孫倆才幸運躲過一劫。然而他的爸爸媽媽都住在小林村,一家全都不幸遭土石吞噬,祖孫倆現在都住在安置中心。
Case 2: 由於李居士的先行作業敏捷,省了不少我們在找孫同學的時間,也謝謝林窗良伯伯及林伯母陳秀玉女士花了很多時間且自費親臨路竹高中與孫同學面談。面談後的報告請
Note 2
教育部案例編號:098-03774
基本資料: 高雄縣路竹鄉縣立路竹高中 -- 孫○○
需求金額:NT$36,000
案件說明:
在莫拉克颱風侵襲台灣期間,無情的大雨挾帶土石流吞噬了孫同學再甲仙鄉小林村的家人,孫同學雙親及弟弟在八八水災中掩埋於土石中,屋毀人亡,孫同學與親屬15人等從此天人永隔。原本和樂興旺的大家族,如今僅剩下大伯何叔叔嬸嬸一家。如今孫同學尚未成年,卻必須一肩扛起一切的生活重擔,隻身在外求學,急需社會持續關懷與救助。
Note 1: 由於事先溝通有誤,所以路竹高中的收據捐款人將會修正成為 "Evergreen Home care"。等到我們收到修正的收據後,我們會再度 post。
Note 2: 下文為來自林窗良伯伯的報告
有關路竹高中 3 年級孫xx同學之救助行動, 已於本(9)月23日上午完成.
此行知悉該生在學中平日自理起居, 尚能克勤克勞, 人際簡明, 胼手胼足,未聞累苦.
乍見其健康, 精神尚屬正常狀態, 其次在該校資料顯示, 尚有類似孫同學之個案, 現正深入確認中.
該活動照片, 因使用傻瓜相機拍攝, 俟沖洗後一併將照片連同相關收據寄上. 耑此布達.
Note 3: 由於孫同學在年滿十八歲後,立即面臨進入社會求生存的壓力。我們會與她保持連絡。如果您有更好建言,歡迎貢獻。
Case 1:
八八水災已過去二個月了。
我們透過口足畫家楊恩典小姐在網上的求助信函及媒體的報導,於八月中旬與六龜育幼院取得連繫,義工 Peggy Chen 花了許多時間找到六龜育幼院的連絡人,經來回溝通與連絡,知悉育幼院院童需要鞋子,在 8/30我們收到來自育幼院的細項信函後, 透過台北的義工Vivian Wu 小姐與台灣愛迪達(adidas)取得連繫,當我們表明我們想買 84 雙球鞋給災區育幼院後,台灣愛迪達(adidas)即刻允諾捐贈59 pairs 的意願。為了成全企業家的美意,我們只有贊助 25 雙新鞋在這個項目上。
由於台灣許多企業在最快的時間點上,協助了當初因八八水災而造成斷水絕糧的六龜育幼院,讓全院120位師生獲得物資補給,及生活上安全無虞。所以我們將把資金運用在幫助因八八水災而變成失親兒的孩子們身上,期幫助他們未來能在經濟及生活等方面,獲得照顧,協助他們走出失親陰霾,平安、健康、喜樂的長大。
莫拉克颱風災情支援網
more pictures from The boston blobe...
在美國一直以來,我們大家不分宗教及種族,都默默地在參與天主教,基督教及慈濟所舉辦的各式各樣的慈善活動.從1999年9月21日到現在,大家因慈善從陌生人而變成了一群交心的好朋友.
去年,因為受人之託,開始關注領養台灣孤兒一事,由於如此,我開始一系列造訪偏遠孤兒院一事.
當我進入偏遠山區及村落,我才注意到,大部份非官方的孤兒院都是教會主辦,且常年以來,孤兒院的食宿都非常簡樸.而附近的在地居民與十字架及教會的感情,很濃.比起我在當地喝的咖啡還濃,而且在山裏,空氣真是 "新鮮又帶點甜味"的呢,心情上真是輕鬆 ......
令人感動的事,當災難發生時,電視上看到的都是佛教慈濟人,搶進災區送救濟品 (有一種用礦泉水就能泡的飯,既乾淨又實際, 建議大家有機會試試 :)), 看到這一幕幕患難見真情的景像,在美國慈濟尚未發動捐款的同時,大家不就一群群開始就利用各種方法捐錢給慈濟.
是的,我想跟大家分享的是,只要踩在台灣的土地上,各宗教都是慈悲擁抱的.
慈濟救災經驗與智慧,在台灣,無人能比;但教會長期深耕偏遠部落,卻有安定受災人心的功用.
常年深耕災區的教會要先清理乾淨,小孩及人大才有清靜的地方可去.未來,政府要借地方給小孩上課,或災民心中的無奈與怨氣,也才會有地方可以平靜.
錢捐那裏都一樣,只要用在該用的地方,有需要的人即時受惠,錢到那個宗教, 你還計較嗎?!
