Free Rides for Charity- charitable donations

You probably know the most common deductions, such as deductions for property taxes and charitable donations, but there are related deductions you might be overlooking. Read on for some of the common fees and expenses you can deduct to reduce your tax bill.
Tax Deductible Donation Laws

Fees for a Worthy Cause
You donated your skinny jeans and your wagon-wheel coffee table to Goodwill and reduced your taxes by increasing your miscellaneous deductions, but you can fatten the sum of your miscellaneous deductions when you remember to include associated fees, such as appraisal fees, for the big-ticket items you donate.
The IRS requires that you provide "a qualified appraisal of the item with the return" when you donate an item worth more than $500. For items like electronics, appliances and furniture, you need to pay a professional to assess the value of your donation; that fee for service is deductible. (For more on charitable contributions, see It Is Better To Give AND Receive.)

Free Rides for Charity
If you're the type of person who likes to donate your free time to volunteer in your community and you dip into your own wallet to get to your favorite charity, you can add those expenses to your miscellaneous deductions. Whether you ride the bus or drive your own car, keep good records of your charitable activities and keep receipts for public transportation or mileage logs for your car (for which you can charge the standard mileage rate for charitable organizations), as well as receipts for parking and tolls.

Getting Fit Gives Deductions a Leg Up
Staying healthy can cost you an arm and a leg; therefore, the IRS allows you a deduction specifically for medical expenses, but only for the portion of expenses over 7.5% of your AGI. Thus, if your AGI is $50,000 you can deduct the portion of your medical expenses over $3,750. If your insurance company reimburses you for any part of your expenses, that amount cannot be deducted. (Read about how to reduce your healthcare expenses in 20 Ways To Save On Medical Bills.)

According to the National Coalition on Healthcare, in 2009 the average premium for employee-only coverage was $4,824 just for insurance, and the average family of four was $13,375. Employees paid an average of 17% of the cost for single coverage and families paid an average of 27%. If you're an individual making $50,000 you could deduct $650, the amount of the premium that exceeds the 7.5% limit. (Remember, you can't deduct your premiums if you buy coverage through a payroll deduction using pretax dollars - in that case you've already earned your tax savings.) (For related reading, see Buying Private Health Insurance.)

A portion of money you pay for long-term care insurance can also ease your tax burden. Long-term care insurance is a deductible medical expense, and the IRS lets you deduct an increasing portion of your premium as you get older as long as the insurance is not subsidized by your employer or your spouse’s employer.
There's another often-overlooked benefit when you visit your doc: you can deduct the cost of transportation to obtain medical care, which means you can write off the expense of taking the bus, car expenses (the standard mileage deduction for medical purposes), tolls and parking.

You can also deduct any additional copayments, prescription drugs, lab fees and more as part of your medical expenses - if your total expenses exceed the 7.5% limit. The IRS also allows you to factor in common fees and services if they are not fully covered by your insurance plan, such as therapy and nursing services. In fact, the IRS' definition of medical expenses is fairly broad and can even include such items as acupuncture and smoking-cessation programs.

Randy Liang Tragedy

What Local Community did for Randy Liang's family and here is what has been accomplished:

5/1:
Ms. Vera Zhao has recently found a stable job and is doing very well getting back on her feet after Randy Liang’s tragic accident. After Vera was notified of her job hiring, she immediately contacted us and thanked us and all of those who offered her a hand when she was in need.
Not only did she thank Evergreen Senior Care, Inc. and local community for all that all volunteers had done for her, but she also asked to join the charity and is kindly wanting to help those in need around her community as well as lending a helping head to the less fortunate. Because of the amount of compassion and consideration of the volunteers and friends around her, she was moved to return the aid to others who could use her help as well.
As for Randy, he is back in school and living his normal daily routines. The students at Langley High School were very welcoming in his return and assured him that everyone was supporting him in every way and that they were willing to lend a helping hand if he needed it. All in all, one lesson is to be learned from this incident—you cannot do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late.
  • Ms. Vera Zhao (Randy's mother) got a full-time job. Liang family pass $300 grocery gift card of May to Dr. Chaujun Lee's family.

  • Message from Beth Stvan: We are thrilled to report that the Liang family returned to their home yesterday! It was a long, exhausting and stressful journey from the New Jersey hospital trauma unit as Randy’s condition is still “fragile” but fortunately all the connections went smoothly. Despite a bad headache, fever and stomach pains, Randy’s trip home went as planned. A HUGE thanks goes out to the Great Falls Fire Station for providing an ambulance and two medics who volunteered their time to transport the family to their home. Randy' s road to recovery will be closely monitored by his doctors and involve six weeks of bed rest, no stairs and limited movement but he is grateful to be home finally. We know that so many people are eager to help out with Randy's recovery and we'll be sure to reach out with an update as we become aware of their needs. The outreach and support from the community over the last few days has been amazing and efforts continue to help this family in their time of need.

Full Story in English:

Randy Liang, 14 year old Freshman and member of the Langley High School band, was attending an out of state school band function the weekend of March 12th. He became ill Saturday and went back to his hotel room where he passed out during the night from pain and was rushed to the emergency room in the morning with a ruptured spleen.

Vera Zhao, mother, is in New Jersey, staying 24/7 in the hospital at her son's bedside where he remains in the trauma unit. The future is difficult for doctors to predict right now as his condition is very serious; however, they are optimistic that he will eventually return back to his home in Virginia.

Unfortunately, this is a family that has come upon some very difficult times in the past year. Vera's husband died this past summer after an 8 year battle with cancer. Due to his condition, they were unable to obtain life insurance. Vera did return to work as an Oracle database administrator; however, in February 2011, her consulting contract with the government was not renewed and she has been out of work, without benefits, since February 28th. At that time, she was given the option to sign up for COBRA insurance but struggled with being able to afford the monthly fees of $1,200. Today(3/18), she has decided to fill out the COBRA paperwork as she is still within the 45 day window to register; however, making ends meet will now be challenging since she is unable to seek employment as she needs to be with her ill son.

Derrick, (Forestville 3rd grader/LeLoup), is residing with relatives in New Jersey, an hour from the hospital. As always, our community does a wonderful job of assisting those in their time of need and this truly is a family in need of help.

Vera was incredibly calm and upbeat on the phone yet broke down in tears when the offer was extended to “rally the troops” to collect money to assist her and her family.

For the short term, the immediate need is financial assistance.

  • Cash donations to cover expenses
  • Pro-bono financial advisor to review their expenses and develop a plan for the near future to cover costs
  • Pro-bono financial advisor abreast of current laws and regulations regarding setting up trusts for charitable contributions
  • Assistance completing COBRA paperwork and any other school paperwork (insurance related)

Long term needs:

  • Potentially, hotel rooms or a home rental for up to six months in the New Jersey area if the diagnosis is that the child cannot be transported back to VA
  • Medical transportation back to VA for Randy (this will be complicated as his system is extremely fragile)
  • Meals when back in VA
  • Assistance with 504 Plan and tutoring for Randy If you are able to "pay it forward", Donations can be sent to: Wachovia, 750 Walker Rd., Great Falls, VA 22055, payable to " Liang Family" account 8857 (this is a non-tax deductions)

Please contact Evergreen Senior Care
