Mr. Stephen Chen, student of the River Hill High School, Clarksville, MD, has assisted in the food packing for our Thanksgiving baskets for past four years. He not only care about the community, but are able to manage his time well enough to balance a volunteer job with other commitments.

On Saturday, November 19, 2011, Volunteers delivered Thanksgiving Food Baskets to families identified as needy by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Martinsburg, WV. For the third year in a row, the CHARITY GROUP of Evergreen Senior Care in conjunction with the St. Vincent de Paul Society have participated in a Thanksgiving Basket Program. We delivered a complete turkey dinner, including at least one turkey depending on the size of the family, and winter coats drive.

On 11/13/2011, because of the generosity of our community, we have delivered holiday food baskets to more than 500 families in DC in the past 8 years. What a wonderful demonstration of caring for our neighbors in need.

Volunteers Make The Difference!! On 11/12/2011, there are over 50 volunteers who help collected donations, pack meals, and winter clothes to about 200 people who receive Meals from us.
We have volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds doing a wide variety of tasks. Our volunteers ranged in age from 13 – 68, represented a wide range of education levels from not graduating high school through doctorate degrees, and were fluent in different languages. Despite these differences, for many of our volunteers, the thing they have in common is the commitment to our mission. In addition to the volunteers, we like to Special Acknowledgment to Mrs. Joan Lee and Mr. Allen Lai - we could absolutely not do this without your big helps. :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello All, Through the helps from all volunteers, the money from the underwear sales plus some small amount of cash and recycled items donations assembled a "Huge" help for the people in need. It enabled us not only helped the local people but also helped the international orphans and children in need.
The effect of our "little steps", through sharing and giving, that we took around with us daily is enormous. We do make a difference and hope everyone is keeping up with the good work doing the charity together.
If you have had ever to make donation to charity groups, you might understand that not every institute is willing to take the time to write Thank you letter or to issue donation receipt to you. However, they would mail you for collecting cash or goods only.
Since we emphasized that we don't have overhead of any administrative expenses, all our volunteers who involve in the charity cases are "100% volunteered" – meaning that not one cent goes to as the administration fees. All gas money is coming out from volunteers' own pockets. Our financial is open and transparent in public. Our volunteers, as always, try the best to get the donation receipt(s) at the same time when the donations are delivered to the needy.
At here, we would like to clarify one thing though: the Evergreen Senior Care does not do any fundraising for others charity groups but for itself. However, since we don't have an account for our charity fund, the fund is actually handled jointly by the Evergreen Senior Care CEO, board members and volunteer Yarlin Ho. We post on the website for where the donations go regularly. Please go to the month abbreviation link above and click on the Month of Thank you letter to see details for the monthly activities. If you have questions, please email to Evergreen Senior Care, Inc. at evergreenseniorcare@gmail.com directly for verification.
The charity group of Evergreen Senior Care in conjunction with the Salvation Army in Baltimore city, Red Cross, SHARE at McLean, the Providence Hospital in DC, The Daughters of Charity Emmitsburg Province, churches in D.C. area, the Charity group of Tzu Chi Greater Washington DC, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington DC , the Rural Outreach and Immigration Services of Martinsburg, WV and the Victim Services Section of Fairfax County Police Department, to help people in need does not charge the administration fee. During the past 7 years, our volunteer activities included distributing food to the homeless, packing back-to-school supplies in backpacks for low income children, providing Thanksgiving meals to less fortunate families, and distributing over 2,000 stuffed animals to over 40 organizations and hospitals in the Washington metropolitan area.
Below explain how we do the charity work - Once we get a request from our contacts, volunteers will decide the budget of the project by determining the types of materials, supplies and quantity for the needy and planning on how much should be raised or how many items should be collected. Then, we actively work on the fundraising to meet the goal. We do not donate cash to any of these organizations, but when they are at need for goods or food, we try in all our ability to provide assistance as much as possible. We even, sometimes, followed them through the process as they distributed the donations to the people they support.
If you would like to support our charity activities, the checks can be written to the Evergreen Senior Care and sent to our new address: 1921 Birch Road, McLean, VA 22101. On the year 2011, the Evergreen Senior Care will be on the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) list of approved charities. Per Dr. Chaujun Lee's family request, the charity group of Evergreen Senior care is posting his story on the website. The full story provided by his friend Mr. Joe Wang.
~~~~~~~~~

Our friend Dr. Chaujun Lee has had nasopharyngeal carcinoma (cancer) for about 4 years. He went through many difficult procedures and treatments, but is no longer receiving any. Now, the doctor is just doing his best to try to minimize the pain. Dr. Lee is in Manor Care Nursing Home right now. Due to the expensive medical care and large amount of paperwork, they are in need of others' support.

One critical lesson his family would like to share with those of Chinese heritage in America is that American doctors seldom deal with cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The symptoms of NPC are very similar to allergies or sinus infection. Despite the fact that he was examined by 3 experienced doctors, the final diagnose came too late. Even blood test might not identify this disease. Checking with an experienced Chinese specialist is highly recommended. (information about NPC can be found as a post script.)

The family would like to emphasize the importance of early detection of NPC (especially for those of Asian heritage). In its early stages, nasopharyngeal carcinoma may not cause any symptoms. Possible noticeable symptoms of nasopharyngeal carcinoma include:

  1. swollen glands or lumps on the side of the neck, even without other symptoms or sicknessess
  2. potting of blood in mucus from nose or mouth
  3. ringing noises, hard of hearing, or pain in the ears
  4. constant nasal congestion
  5. headaches on only one side of the head for no apparent reason
  6. unexplainable loss of pupil control - crosseyes, double vision, numbness in the face

Of course not everyone will experience all of these symptoms, but it is best to err on the side of caution and take preventative action. We would wish this sickness could be detected as early as possible.

It's a daunting task to take care of Dr. Lee in the nursing home. Joe and friends are working on a Google Calendar to share the time among close friends. You would only have to have a Google Email account. Once you have an account and can share the effort, Mrs. Lee will provide you with Permission to “Make changes to event”. Then you could help as a coordinator to arrange the caretaking/visiting time among friends.

One tough question is how to handle the enormous medical expense that is not covered by insurance. A few friends started to look into the issue, but we are still trying to figure this out. If you have any suggestions, please email to Mr. Joe Wang at "joewang_va@yahoo.com" .

Donations can be sent to:
13107 Farmsted Court, Herndon, VA 20171.
Please make checks payable to "Mrs. Chinman Lee"

A few suggestions for friends to visit Dr. Lee in Manor Care Nursing Home :
  1. Please come in small group 1~3 people. This is a request from the Nursing Home.
  2. If you are sick or not sure, please wait after you are fully recovered.
  3. Wash your hand before taking care of Dr. Lee.
  4. Sing in, sign out and write a few messages.
  5. A few visitors’ notices are posted above the bed. Please read it.

Manor Care Nursing Home.

Mr. Joe Wang

同時,善心捐款可以直接寄到:
13107 Farmsted Court, Herndon, VA 20171.
Please make checks payable to "Mrs. Chinman Lee"
