2012 Charity Report

Hurricane Sandy Relief - How You Can Help

November 9th through December, 2012

Update 11/21/2012:

  • The goods volunteers purchased from YOUGIVEGOODS for Help Hurricane Sandy Victims have been delivered to ATLANTIC CITY RESCUE MISSION ( 2009 Bacharach Blvd.,Atlantic City, NJ 08401). Total value of goods purchased: $2,469. (see details)
  • 3 minivan donations(details, please see pictures below) have also been delivered to The Fox Trucking Company which they will make a delivery to Neptune, NJ once the truck is full.

With all your help, we have covered both the northern and southern NJ coastline. We have tried our best to bless all victims of Hurricane Sandy.

11/16/2012 and 11/21/2012, four of our volunteers took off from work and drove 3 vans (around 100 boxes) up to the Fox Trucking Company in Easton, Maryland to drop donations for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The Fox Trucking Company told us that they are in urgent need of more baby items and winter coats (not clothes). How to drop your donations, please contact either Mrs. Tseng or Mrs. Mei-Ling Flanders at (evergreenseniorcare@gmail.com)

Update 11/15/2012,Our goal is to get the truck completely packed up all the way to the top. The FOX Trucking Company don't want to drive up with a half-empty truck, they said we can try our best to give them the donations anytime before next Tuesday (Thursday is the Thanksgiving Holiday), so they can deliver to the food bank before the Thanksgiving Holiday. So, we will continue to collect donations till 11/19/2012.

Update 11/14/2012News on the world journal (世界新聞網)

Update 11/13/2012, The Fox Trucking Company in Easton, MD 21601 will provide FREE delivery to the food bank in Neptune, NJ. This location is closer to the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The Fox Trucking Company had asked that items to be placed in boxes only, not bags. They will not only take the items on the list which the shelter requested below, but also take the non-perishable food items.

Next week is Thanksgiving and I am sure you can imagine the plethora of victims who will be without homes or without their families next weekend due to the disarray Hurricane Sandy caused in the New Jersey region.
We have contacted many non-profit organizations but they are all in need of the same items to help the homeless in their areas. So, we have decided to take initiative and deliver the items up to New Jersey ourselves.

As for the non-food drive: (collecting will end at 11/15 Thu.)
Two of our volunteers, Mr. Ming-Ching Chen and Mr. Mark Liau, are willing to drive a U-Haul truck up to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission in the Atlantic city of New Jersey this upcoming Friday. Please note, we are looking for someone to donate money to cover the transportation costs (the U-Haul truck, gas, and E-Z pass fees). We can get these fees tax-deducted as well. The following is a list of immediate items that the victims are in need of:
  • Diapers
  • ladies personal items
  • blankets
  • flash lights and batteries
  • Heavy Duty Trash Liners
  • Latex Gloves
  • Coats for men & women
  • Styrofoam cups 8 oz
  • Drinking cups, 12 - 16 oz size
  • Personal / Baby Wet Wipes
  • Mens underwear large, XL, 2X
  • Men’s white socks
  • Women’s underwear (size 10 and up)
  • Socks for women
  • Socks for small boys
  • Toiletries: soap, razors, shave cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste
  • Board Games - checkers, chess, puzzle books
***I hope everyone can respect the victims and make sure your donations are clean and washed before you hand them off to us. If you would like a donation receipt, please prepare a count of the items you are donating on the paper and we will write a receipt for you. Also, please keep in mind of the items on the list and try to donate those items only since available space on the SHELTER is clearly a concern.

As for the food donations for the victims:

We have already started a website (http://www.yougivegoods.com/HelpHurricaneSandyVictims-2) where you can purchase food online and they will deliver them to the victims directly. The YOUGIVEGOODS said they can make the delivery to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission -- Chef Dave.  They are currently planning deliveries in the Atlantic City area for this Friday - so if we can achieve our goal by Wednesday, they can deliver on Friday.  Otherwise, we would have to wait until next week (aka after Thanksgiving)....

I hope that everyone can help out with this drive in one way or another. We will notify the newspaper of this fundraising project, so if you would not like your name anywhere then please let me know. Also, spread the word and forward this e-mail to your friends! Thank you!
It's great to see everyone pitching in when a disaster like this happens. Hopefully you are inspired to seize the moment and get involved.  Start a drive, make a food donation, spread the word! It's easy to do and leaves you feeling great.

  • During the recent rough economic years, a lot of people have been turning to nonprofits to find relief, but some of those groups have had to cut back due to lack of funds. The job opportunities are also impacted across the country. Many people who made charitable contributions in the past are now struggling from paycheck to paycheck. A lot of individuals and families are, in fact, getting first-hand experience at what it's like to be on the flip side of the situation, trying to manage after losing a home or job or both. Thus, as we've already seen, the donations are down tremendously this year.With our limited resources and funds, however, we once again helped more than 100 students back to school successfully on August 2012. Thank you very much to all our donors for your selfless giving. We could not complete this project without your compassion and support.

Aug & Sep: Back-To-School Project packing and delivery

July: Back-To-School Project Aimed at Helping Children In Need
In Yangon, Myanmar, there are children culling for recyclable & reusable items in a junkyard. While poverty does not distract from their beauty, a lifetime of deprivation will take a toll on their health and well-being. Hopefully we will not see this scene in the USA.
In a United Nations report (http://www.un.org/works/goingon/poverty/jessica_story.html), the UN shared a sad story with all of us -- Over 12 million American children suffer from poverty, and it infects every aspect of their lives—from family relations, to school friendships to dreams for the future. Although the family isn't homeless, they have only $120 each month to buy food. Often, there isn't enough to last the month, so some children who went to school turned to charity for help.
This year, we teamed up with two Catholic Sisters, one in DC and one in West Virginia, to help a total of 50 children and one school in west Virginia from low income families. The Sisters are willing to help all, regardless of race, sex or nationality, and they believe that all have the right to nutritious food and healthcare. It is hard to believe that in a country as prosperous as the United States, children like those in Yangon, Myanmar go hungry every day. Also, as the economy is worsened, there are families scrambling for food and children searching for supplies that they can use for each school year, but they nearly have enough supplies to last them a semester. There are an increasing number of families who are unable to provide their children with sufficient school supplies, and that is why I am writing to you today to ask for your support of this effort.
Please take a moment to browse through our doantions list at here, we provided the number of requests for each category, the inventory, and how many supplies short we are. We also make a price suggestion for you so that you can find the best deals. This is a great way to have a real, positive impact on a child's life. If you are interested in donating to help this effort, you can contact our charity group at evergreenseniorcare@gmail.com for registering for school supply donations.  Keep in mind our association is a non-profit group, and we will be willing to provide you with a tax deductible donation receipt. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

the DC  Ronald McDonald House
The DC Ronald McDonald House Charities dinner program welcome you to join with us. Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. The treatment may last a day, a month, or even longer. It's a long time to be away from home, or to divide a family. Ronald McDonald Houses around the world offer families a way to stay together, in proximity to the treatment hospital, and be comfortable and cared for during their stay. (detail) we're looking for more families to join us to keep this charitable project going. If you're interested in this meaningful chance and giving back to the community, please do contact us. We would be more than willing to provide you with more information as well as including you and your family in our monthly gatherings for this event.

We really appreciate it.

International Free Clinic 無國界醫療 : A group of nurses, including a nurse practitioner (is one of our volunteers), from Villanova University are going on a medical mission trip to Chulucanas, Peru in South America on March 3 through March 10. Thank you to Dr. Benson Yu, MD, Fairfax, VA, Internal Medicine for sponsoring most of the medicine that was brought along on the trip.
Volunteers will work at an Augustinian Mission in a small city of Chulucanas in northern Peru. Volunteers will have the opportunity to interact with the local people and experience the Peruvian culture while accomplishing various tasks necessary for the community, such as cleaning, painting, and tutoring at the local parochial school, working at a local orphanage and elderly home, visiting a trade school for women, and taking a trip to and purchase items from an authentic Chulucanas pottery workshop.

February:
CASE report from a volunteer:
The Dankyi family is going through much difficulty. Their house was completely burned to the ground. They are a family of eight total, a husband, wife, and six boys, and are of limited economic means. The boys' ages range from 20 months to 16 years old. All their personal belongings were burned, so clothes, shoes and food is of essence for the children to go to school. It would be extremely helpful if we could get a few things for this family to help them in this curtail times of their lives. The husband was injured due to his work, so he is unable to work anymore and is now on bed rest. The entire family relies on the mother's income; the mother is a nursing assistant at a hospital. We will be collecting necessary everyday items for the family. Every contribution counts. If you are interested in contributing, please contact us at "evergreenseniorcare@gmail.com".

Congratulations to Alliance Rocket (The team leader, Stephen Chen, is one of our volunteers) from Riverhill High School, MD, for winning the SPHERES Challenge 2011 Championship on the International Space Station!

Mr. Stephen Chen has actively been involved in serving the homeless in Baltimore. He has volunteered for our organization for more than three years now. We are very proud of his achievements.(see news from

January:

Year 2011 activities
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello All, Through the helps from all volunteers, the money from the underwear sales plus some small amount of cash and recycled items donations assembled a "Huge" help for the people in need. It enabled us not only helped the local people but also helped the international orphans and children in need.
The effect of our "little steps", through sharing and giving, that we took around with us daily is enormous. We do make a difference and hope everyone is keeping up with the good work doing the charity together.
If you have had ever to make donation to charity groups, you might understand that not every institute is willing to take the time to write Thank you letter or to issue donation receipt to you. However, they would mail you for collecting cash or goods only.
Since we emphasized that we don't have overhead of any administrative expenses, all our volunteers who involve in the charity cases are "100% volunteered" – meaning that not one cent goes to as the administration fees. All gas money is coming out from volunteers' own pockets. Our financial is open and transparent in public. Our volunteers, as always, try the best to get the donation receipt(s) at the same time when the donations are delivered to the needy.
At here, we would like to clarify one thing though: the Evergreen Senior Care does not do any fundraising for others charity groups but for itself. However, since we don't have an account for our charity fund, the fund is actually handled jointly by the Evergreen Senior Care CEO, board members and volunteer Yarlin Ho. We post on the website for where the donations go regularly. Please go to the month abbreviation link above and click on the Month of Thank you letter to see details for the monthly activities. If you have questions, please email to Evergreen Senior Care, Inc. at evergreenseniorcare@gmail.com directly for verification.
The charity group of Evergreen Senior Care in conjunction with the Salvation Army in Baltimore city, Red Cross, SHARE at McLean, the Providence Hospital in DC, The Daughters of Charity Emmitsburg Province, churches in D.C. area, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington DC , the Rural Outreach and Immigration Services of Martinsburg, WV and the Victim Services Section of Fairfax County Police Department, to help people in need does not charge the administration fee. During the past 9 years, our volunteer activities included distributing food to the homeless, packing back-to-school supplies in backpacks for low income children, providing Thanksgiving meals to less fortunate families, and distributing over 2,000 stuffed animals to over 40 organizations and hospitals in the Washington metropolitan area.
Below explain how we do the charity work - Once we get a request from our contacts, volunteers will decide the budget of the project by determining the types of materials, supplies and quantity for the needy and planning on how much should be raised or how many items should be collected. Then, we actively work on the fundraising to meet the goal. We do not donate cash to any of these organizations, but when they are at need for goods or food, we try in all our ability to provide assistance as much as possible. We even, sometimes, followed them through the process as they distributed the donations to the people they support.
If you would like to support our charity activities, the checks can be written to the Evergreen Senior Care and sent to our new address: 1921 Birch Road, McLean, VA 22101. On the year 2011, the Evergreen Senior Care will be on the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) list of approved charities. For more details for all charity activities, please see : http://evergreenseniorcareva.blogspot.com/
Year 2014
Year 2013
Year 2012
Year 2011
Year 2010
Hello All,
In the past few years, all volunteers who involved in the charity cases are "100% volunteered" – meaning that not one cent goes to as the administration fees. All gas money are coming out from volunteers' own pockets.
On the year 2010, we're planning to support the following groups: (Thank you letters)
If you would like to support our charity activities, the checks can be written to the Evergreen Senior Care and sent to our new address: 1921 Birch Road, McLean, VA 22101.
For more details for all charity activities, please see : http://evergreenseniorcareva.blogspot.com/
In addition, I have 3 things to share with you:
1) One of our main goals, through the volunteering works, is to encourage people to reuse all items, such as recycled papers, used clothes, shoes in good conditions, and so on. Our recycled papers were used to help the local churches and school in poverty to reduce expense of life and also helping to protect our environment. Sr. Ann Adele Kelly of the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg, Maryland wrote a Thank-You note which is attached. (the picture is right)
2) The president of the Evergreen Senior Care, Mr. Myles Nienstadt who is also a full time volunteer, spent 3 years writing proposal for requesting special care for adult day care. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, the Fairfax County approved the joint grant proposal submitted in December 2009 by the Evergreen Senior Care and the Central Senior Center. The grant allows them to provide adult day care in Western Fairfax for the upcoming two years - up to 24 seniors of all backgrounds in the first year and 40 in the second year. This is a BIG step. Hopefully by this fall, the Evergreen Senior Care will work out a new adult day care center in Centreville that the Central Senior Center (Korean) and the Evergreen (Chinese) will be collaborating to open and operate.
3) Volunteer English Teaching in Taiwan, activity details, please see here.
Thanks for your support.
在上個月,維州費郡政府終於首肯該項計劃,希望從今年秋天,北維州的耆老們就可以在 Centreville, VA 的韓國教會裏,享受中文服務及餐點,耆老們不必再耽心英文聽不懂的困擾了. Mr. Myles Nienstadt 是該項計劃的最大功臣!
9 Warning Signs You're About to Get Audited (USNews)
9 Warning Signs You're About to Get Audited (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/9-warning-signs-youre-audited-175810539.html)
By Kimberly Palmer | U.S.News & World Report LP – Wed, Mar 7, 2012 12:58 PM EST
The IRS is on the prowl--possibly for you. Thanks to improved detection systems and computerized checks, the IRS can more easily identify red flags that trigger audits, says Joseph Perry, a partner at Marcum LLP, a public accounting firm. "They definitely contact taxpayers more frequently," he adds.
Contact typically starts with a letter requesting more information and can lead to in-person meetings. Perry says it's usually triggered by a tax return that contains something unusual, such as an above-average deduction or change in income from previous years. As long as the taxpayer can defend his filings with the proper paperwork and logic, Perry says he has nothing to worry about--other than the time it takes to respond.
Before you start looking anxiously at the mailbox, wondering if the IRS will be mailing you a letter, consider whether any of these nine signs that you're about to get audited apply:
1. You made a lot less money last year. Perry says the IRS looks out for any major changes in income, which can signify that a taxpayer is under-reporting his earnings. Since the IRS tracks historic data, people who suddenly start reporting much less income can be flagged for an audit.
2. You lose or forget to file a form. Since employers send copies of all 1099 forms and W-2 forms to the IRS as well as to you, if you lose your version or forget to file it with your taxes, the IRS can flag your return for review. If you receive a form that looks like it has an incorrect amount or inaccurate information on it, Perry suggests talking to your employer before filing your taxes. You want to make sure the information you provide to the IRS matches up with any other information they are receiving about you.
3. You work for yourself. It might not seem fair, but being self-employed can raise red flags for the IRS, especially if you claim your home office and other costs as business expenses but don't earn much income. "The IRS questions those type of businesses," says Perry. His advice is to keep careful track of all paperwork so you can defend any deductions and credits you take.
4. You claim losses from a hobby. While writing off business expenses can be legitimate, it's illegal to pretend a hobby is a business and then write off the related expenses. For example, if you enjoy woodworking, you might practice the craft on the weekends for fun. Doing so does not enable you to write off the cost of wood and tools. (If you were selling those creations online, that would be a different story.) The difference between a small business and a hobby, says Perry, is that a business "must be entered into and conducted with the reasonable expectation of making a profit."
5. Deducing home office (or car) expenses. While plenty of people can legitimately claim home office expenses on their taxes, some people do so incorrectly. Merely checking email from home after work, for example, does not justify a home office deduction, says Perry. In order to qualify, the home office must be used for work only. Likewise, claiming a car as a business expense can also raise red flags; Perry urges taxpayers doing this to keep careful track of how much they use the car for business versus personal use.
6. You included expensive meals and entertainment costs among your deductions. The IRS often double-checks these types of claims to make sure they are legitimate business expenses, says Perry.
7. You were particularly generous this year. Perry says the IRS is on the lookout for people who inflate their charitable donations, and that the agency takes a close look at taxpayers who say they donated $500 or just under, since anyone who donates more than that amount must file form 8283. (And if you do donate more than $500, be sure to file that form.)
8. You maintain an overseas bank account. The IRS has added more reporting requirements this year for people with money in foreign accounts. Failing to report one could trigger an audit.
9. Your numbers don't match. If numbers on various forms don't match or add up correctly, the IRS is likely to notice and look into any disparities. So treat your taxes like a final exam in algebra and check over all the numbers before submitting.
As long as you know you filed your paperwork properly, you can sit back and enjoy any refunds coming your way.
